Just days after recording their first covid-19 case at the school, Maranda high school has now recorded 10 more cases bringing the total number of coronavirus positive students to 11. The first case was reported last weekend prompting the government to kickoff targeted testing in the school on Tuesday. The targeted testing was able to establish 28 close contacts whom out of that, 10 have now tested positive. This now brings the national tally of positive cases within schools to 33 teachers, 30 students and 7 non teaching staff. Tononoka High School and Star of the Sea Secondary school have already been closed after positive cases were recorded in the schools.
The positive cases have sent chills across the country as parents with students at Maranda are now panicking over the safety of their children. The Siaya County Director of Education, Joseph Wamocho has however assured parents that there is no cause to worry and that they are working closely with the Ministry of education to ensure the safety of all the learners. He also added that three schools within the county have so far recorded atleast one coronavirus case each.
Mr. Wamocho also took a stand in defending the education CS George Magoha in his stand not to close down schools stating that they are already fumigating all the schools across the country and enforcing MOH guidelines in schools, hence no need to panic. The CS on Friday took a bold stand stating that schools will not be closed despite the surge in the number of positive cases. “What we are grappling with is do we open for the other children or not, nobody wants our children to stay home forever, it’s a collective responsibility that must be made by parents, teachers and stakeholders,” Prof Magoha stated.
In regards to the scheduled exams and school calendar, the CS stated, “The examination timetable; there are no changes because like I said we are not planning, for now, to shut down because of COVID-19, if that time comes we will tell you. The public doesn’t need to worry that even the children who have been found with COVID-19, the government is fully in control, some schools have been closed for 14 days, my ministry, Interior and health, and we are working to ensure the children get the best.”
