The Griezmann soap opera is finally over! Barcelona through an official press release have confirmed that they met the French man’s 120 million euros release close to officially sign him from Atletico Madrid. The deal that has been in development for two years boiled down to a disappointing yet sweet end for Barcelona who were looking at acquiring Griezmann at a cheaper price. A journey that Barca terms as long and tiresome but worth it.

Antoine Griezmann’s journey to the Camp Nou began back in October 2017. Barcelona had expressed their interest in the world cup winner hoping that he would make a move during the 2018 January transfer window. Everyone expected him to switch sides, even Ernesto Valverde had such hopes back then. However, that didn’t happen and everyone looked forward to the 2018 summer transfer season. To everyone’s surprise, Griezmann signed another 2 year contract extension with Atletico and he left Barcelona’s fans heartbroken.

After a poor campaign at Atletico in the 2018/2019 season, Griezmann finally decided he wanted a new challenge. Come June, the team’s management admitted that Griezmann had requested a move away from the club. And that began the push and pull between Barca and Atleti on the striker’s market valuation. Kicking off negotiations at 200 million euros, Barca tried all available options including trading a player but ended up with nothing except from pay the minimum release close which came down to 120 million euros. Initially, Atletico was open to acquiring Semedo plus a reduced fee but Barca weren’t willing to let go of the defender.

Now with Griezmann at the Camp Nou, Barca’s attack looks even more lethal. With several options at their disposure, it would be really interesting to see how they would line up next season. But I bet the Suarez, Griezmann and Messi attacking trio is the future of European football. I wouldn’t say for Messi’s aging since he gets even better by the years.
