Education CS George Magoha has just announced the reopening of schools as from Monday the 12th of October 2020. This comes just a few weeks after the ministry of education directed teachers to report to their respective schools as from 28th of September 2020 to make the learning environment habitable and prepare for the imminent reopening of the schools. In addition to that, the ministry had also allowed tertiary institutions to reopen for final year students as from the 5th of October. These developments if something to go by, were simply an assertion that the ministry was going to give in to the pressure to reopen schools.
Despite the president stating earlier on that the reopening of schools will only happen after the ministry has assured the safety of learners within the institutions, the education CS has gone ahead to announce the reopening dates for the second term. In the new directive, the progressive reopening of schools will commence with Grade 4 (Competency Based Curriculum class), Class 8 and form 4s on Monday, 12th October 2020.
The new calendar will also see candidates sit for their KCPE and KCSE exams as from March. Here are the new term dates:
Opening – 12th October 2020
Closing – 23rd December 2020
Opening – 4th January 2021
Closing – 19th March 2021
Starts – 22nd March 2021
Ends – 24th March 2021
Starts – 25th March 2021
Ends – 16th April 2021
The attention now turns to the CS and the president as the tough hurdle of assuring student safety lies ahead.
