Kenyan comedian Eric Omondi aka Eriko ran into trouble. It’s the usual kind of trouble that Kenyans ran into every once in a while. But why Eric Omondi? What did he do this time? Because he clearly didn’t crack a joke
As he was headed to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), he was stopped by a traffic officer. Eric Omondi’s crime was that he was overlapping. This was on Mombasa Road. Kenyan drivers have gone through this so many times.
Eric Omondi was going for a CNN interview. He was featured on the channel’s show African Voices. He talked about the challenges he has been through as a comedian. This was the time he had not yet established himself in the industry.
“COMEDY HAS REALLY EVOLVED. I STARTED DOING COMEDY AT WEDDINGS AND IN CHURCHES. WE WERE PAID USING SODAS AND FOOD. THAT WOULD BE OUR PAY, OUR CONTRACT. THEN IT MOVED TO VERY LITTLE MONEY. THAT’S WHY I THINK MY HEROES ARE THE FORMER COMEDIANS, THE OLDER GUYS, VITIMBI CREW (MZEE OJWANG, MAMA KAYAI, NGOMONGO ETC) BECAUSE THEY’RE OUR FREEDOM FIGHTERS.” He said in the interview. Who remembers the likes of Vitimbi? That’s when comedy started for Kenyans. Imagine if Eric Omondi featured in the show? Hehee.
Just so you know, Eric Omondi was later let go off by the cop. Yea, otherwise he would not have made it to the glamorous city. His girlfriend must be proud. But we gotta ask, how did the cop let Eric go without him parting with anything?
