Pitch Perfect 2  the sequel to the movie by the same name premiered on screens across the world this weekend. The novel film was a bolt from the blue, but what it lacked in comic relief and performance angst, its sequel makes up for and does it a one better; this time around, there’s more music, new characters, and tons of perfect Fat Amy moments.

Here are six things that we loved about the sequel:

  1. Flashlight

Among the many songs from Pitch Perfect 2, the highlight of the soundtrack has to be the original tune, “Flashlight.” The song, which is a brainchild of the joint effort of Sia and Sam Smith (with Jessie J lending her vocals) is perhaps one of the most re-worked and stripped down song of the entire collective. In the movie however, it’s featured as a song that Emily (Hailee Steinfeld) comes up with and workshops throughout the movie. It has multiple renditions, but we think that the manner in which it was incorporated to the final Bellas’ performance was its best version yet.

2. Amy and Bumper’s Relationship thingy

To the disappointment of most, our favorite couple of Jesse (Skylar Astin) and Becca (Anna Kendrick) hardly even appear together in this sequel, but we thank God for small mercies, as we at least get to be gratified through the budding romance thingy that Amy (Rebel Wilson) and Bumper (Adam DeVine) seem to have going on. The fact they both have very strong, and seemingly peculiar personalities make the sequel all the more visually satisfying. It’s also nice to see that two characters that initially purely existed for comic relief have been given a human face.

3. Cups

“Cups” was the breakout hit from the prequel ‘Pitch Perfect and it’s fitting that the sequel incorporates a throwback to the song during the campfire sequence. It takes on a completely different meaning now that the girls are about to graduate, and it’s a stunningly delivered.

4. Ester Dean as Cynthia-Rose

We’re kind of obsessed with Ester Dean, and not just because of her song “Crazy Youngsters.” Dean was already an accomplished songwriter before signing on to play Cynthia-Rose Adams in both Pitch Perfect films, but the Oklahoma native said she found a home among the other actresses, who quickly morphed into close friends.

5. That wacky Riff-Off

We got a peek at this riff-off in an early clip, but seeing it unfold in its entirety was amazing. Everything about it is ludicrous and David Cross a puzzling acappella enthusiast only adds more comic relief to this sequel.

6. Das Sound Machine

Their performances are meticulously crafted and equal amounts of impressive and terrifying. Pieter (Flula Borg) and Kommissar (Birgitte Hjort Sorensen) are so severe on stage, but they’re even intense when they’re having a casual conversation with the Bellas. Every confrontation is fierce and biting.
