The cases keep on surging as covid-19 ravages through schools across the country with Kakamega County reporting the first student death. Over 10 schools have so far reported at least one positive case within the school even as the government retains that students are safer in schools. Education CS George Magoha announced a new school calendar yesterday insisting that students will go back to school come January as planned.

A form four student at Lureko Secondary School in Busia County has become the first student to succumb to the virus across the country. The female candidate developed complications while at home and was rushed to St. Mary’s Mission Hospital. She was later on transferred to Lifecare Hospital in Bungoma where she succumbed to the virus. “The student developed complications while at home and was taken to St Mary’s Mission Hospital in Mumias and later transferred to Lifecare Private Hospital in Bungoma. But it was too little too late, she succumbed moments later,” said Kakamega County Health Executive Collins Matemba.

The parents have also tested positive and are currently undergoing home based care.
