Binge eating, especially snacks isn’t a new thing while at home. But now that corona virus has extended our stay-at-home time, this habit might be getting out of hand. You might find yourself overeating while feeling out of control and powerless to stop. It’s a disaster considering some of us had body fitness plans this year. When schools open and everything goes back to normal, you might risk coming out of the house fatter than you expected. So therefore here are a few guidelines to help you tame that wild habit of binge-eating every time.

First, you’ll need to understand how it works. Generally, it takes a combination of emotions, current experience, or social pressure for one to start picking up this routine. This combination of various factors at times leads you to start binge-eating unknowingly and before you realize it, its already a habit that you can’t let go of. Most of the time you find yourself craving something to bite simply because you are bored so you want something to comfort yourself.

It has been proven that many people who develop a binge eating habit find that food is an easy way to suppress feelings of anger, depression, loneliness, or lack of attention. Others may have trouble with impulse control and managing and expressing their feelings. Low self-esteem, loneliness, and body dissatisfaction may also contribute. This means that you have to strive to engage yourself so that you remain active and occupied especially during this self-quarantine period. Make sure to shower every day- prevents body dissatisfaction, do some beauty hacks- boosts your esteem, connect with people- avoids loneliness and dress up- makes you feel like the king and queen you are.

It could just be an old habit of clearing the plate or mindlessly going through the whole bag of chips you’ve just opened. These episodes happen to everyone, but not necessarily a way to suppress feelings. The path to break old habits is getting to know yourself deeply and becoming mindful of your emotions and triggers. Be aware that being able to notice your emotions on the spot and being able to stop yourself from acting out is a positive step to go.


Whenever you notice the arousal of one of the feelings that are usually leading you to binge eating, distract yourself, and do something productive. With time, if you make mindfulness a regular part of your life, you’ll start to develop a healthier relationship with food. There’s no magic to it, it’s a personal decision you’ll need to make.
