Spanish football giants Barcelona lost 2-0 to arch-rivals Real Madrid again, this time in the Spanish Super Cup.It’s something that can be easily rubbed off as one loss to one of the best teams in the world (European champions) but the loss is a second one in less than a week to the same opponent. Now, in the first leg of the cup, the Catalans were thrashed 3-1 by Ronaldo and company at their Camp Nou! It’s been a dream for any team to even get a draw at that pitch, but Real can not only win, but win by 3-1! Then yesterday they lost 2-0.
The return leg meant Barca had to score 3-1 to force the game into post-match penalties or a 3-0 win to guarantee them the win. But it seems to be on the wrong track, with everything going against them. Barca has a new coach, Ernesto Valverde, who replaced Louis Enrique last summer. The team has lost Neymar to French giants PSG, and remains with the older players at attack. Andres Iniesta, their legendary playmaker, is 33, Messi and Suarez are both 30.
For a team of Barca’s stature, they ought to be having a starlet coming up to replace the oldies. None has been identified to take the mantle from Messi (Deulofeu has not yet proven himself), who took over from Ronaldinho. Real Madrid has Asensio. Their most anticipated buy from Guangzhou Evergrande, Paulinho, is already 29 years old. By selling Neymar, the new coach might have done himself one big mistake. The second match against real was supposed to be easier for them, having in mind that their playmaker Cristiano Ronaldo was not playing, but what happened? Is time up for Barca already? Well, we’ll wait and see.
