Waiting game: Depay is yet to show his best form for United

After months of uncertainty, it appears that Louis van Gaal has found the perfect position for Memphis Depay at Manchester United.

Unfortunately for both manager and player, it’s the bench.

Ask the Dutchman what his Red Devils side lacks and he’ll tell you it’s ‘pace on the wings’. It’s the reason he signed Angel Di Maria and why he was reluctant to let the Argentinian leave even after he made it clear he wanted to go.

Listening to Van Gaal talk about the shortcomings of his squad it’s easy to forget he signed a winger in the summer. Last season in Holland, Depay was everything Van Gaal says he wants in a wide man – quick, direct and able to score goals from out wide.

On the bench against Sheffield United and Newcastle, he won the penalty at Old Trafford on Saturday and created a goal for Wayne Rooney at St James’ Park and a golden chance for Marouane Fellaini.

Van Gaal appears to have found a way of getting the best our of Depay. But it’s far from perfect.
