Safaricom is now a high school! Kenya’s most profitable company today released a media report stating that come January 2016, they will be opening the doors to the M-PESA Foundation Academy (why didn’t they just call it Safaricom High School, I wonder?)… MPESA Academy

According to the Safaricom PR machine report in the local dailies, M-pesa Academy will be a state of the art, mixed boarding high school funded by the M-Pesa Foundation. Construction of the school will cost 3 Billion shillings and is targeted for completion in 2016 with the initial intake in January 2016. The school will be located in Mang’u, Thika.Equity Teen Member Account

What is clear is that Safaricom has keenly taken note of Equity Bank’s ‘Wings To Fly’ program which also targets high school students. The Wings To Fly program is a comprehensive secondary scholarship support program for top performing yet needy students in the sub-counties across Kenya. The program is in line with Kenya’s vision 2030 to transform Kenya into a middle-income economy led by well-educated and trained citizens.

From the way things are looking, the teen market is becoming very attractive to those in the mobile and money market. Let’s watch this space for more action, coming to a high school near you…
