The high school sports arena was full of surprises and never jerking moments in 2019, with several underdogs keeping some of the sports giants on their toes. It was also characterized by the unfortunate fall of some previous champions and the unexpected rise of some unknown names on the sports scene. However, the tough question is, will these champions maintain the pace in 2020? And how far will they go in this new season? Will we witness the same action we were blessed with in 2019? The pressure is on and the underdogs are out to dethrone them! Here is a brief reflection of the champions who have to watch over their back this year:



The seven-time national boys’ basketball champions clinched their 8th title after thumping Dagoretti High School 69-52 in a thrilling final last year in Mombasa. The game went on to be voted the game of the season as the champions held on to a hard fought victory.

Agoro Sare surprised the Nyanza region after putting up the fight of their lives to knock out former regional champions Ambira High School. They also beat regional giants Maseno School to clinch the regional title. It was a year they wouldn’t wish to forget!

Buru Buru Girls once more delivered a breathtaking final by narrowly beating Kaya Tiwi by 43 to 41.

Rugby 7s

The rivalry came down to the two rugby giants, Laiser Hill and Upperhill in the 2019 rugby finals. Upper Hill stunned the rivals to exact a revenge on the finals they lost to Laiser Hill in 2016 in Embu. Upper Hill went on to be crowned East African Champions.

Rugby 15s

Popularly known as the Barbarians, Kakamega High School rugby team claimed the East African title after a record breaking campaign which saw them win all their 6 regional games on their way to the title. This was their 7th regional title.
