US based Kenyan Christian Rapper Mohwaz just dropped his debut album titled Shujaa. The rapper who is highly revered for his diction, lyrical agility, and astounding rap flows has finally dropped his debut album after several years in the game. The rapper’s journey to this project has been a long one that can be traced all the way back to 2011 when he released “Sema Nasi Bwana” which went on to win the Best Christian Hip Hop song at the International Music Awards. The success of “Sema Nasi Bwana” was also followed by “Lazima ni Eneze” in 2012 which won Best Diaspora Gospel song at the Sauti Awards and Best Hip-Hop act at the Talanta Awards. His fans expected him to drop a project then but it never was to be.
Almost a decade later, Mohwaz has finally decided to drop his debut album featuring some of the legendary names in the rap industry. The 20 songs “Shujaa” album has taken ten years to put together and that explains why it’s a masterpiece. It has features from veteran Kenyan rappers Bamboo, Zakah Wenyeji and Labalaa. Their presence on the album alone is a clear validation of a true Hip-Hop album. On the gospel front several dope musicians both from Kenya and the USA have been involved, this includes fiery rapper Kamlesh Kagaba, Allan Aaron, Phil Kimemia, Varesa London (USA) and Loso (USA).
When you listen to all the songs on the album you get the feel of a well-planned project as it also has an international touch; in terms of songwriting and production. By Mohwaz rapping in Swahili in almost all of the songs on the album he makes it easy to reach the Kenyan audience who form a bulk of his audience despite him being based in the USA.
