The MTV Video Music Awards are just around the corner and the hype surrounding the world-famous show is growing. With many expecting another night of super performances, heartbreaks, and jovial moods, the VMA’s will be one to watch. However, Grammy-Award winning artist Roddy Ricch and Colombian superstar J Balvin, have decided to drop out of the performance lineup barely days to the event.

Ricch issued his cancellation via Instagram. “My team and I did everything in our power to make this work, due to COVID compliance issues at the last minute we had to call off the performance. My team and I are safe and everyone’s health is the main priority, as well as giving a quality performance. I appreciate MTV for the opportunity to perform and I hope I can see y’all next year. STAY SAFE ” read the statement by The Box rapper.

‘Mi Gente’ singer J Balvin

Balvin on the other hand confirmed his no-show through one of his representatives.  The representative did not provide details as to why the superstar pulled out. However, in a pre-taped video released two weeks ago, Balvin disclosed that he had contracted COVID-19 and that it made his life difficult.

The performance lineup currently includes Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, BTS, Miley Cyrus, DaBaby, Doja Cat, Maluma, CNCO, and the Black Eyed Peas. It is reported that more celebrities will be added to the list before the show goes live on Sunday. The performances will occur on different stages in New York city in adherence to COVID-19 protocols and to pay ‘homage’ to the vibrant city.

In terms of this year’s nominations, Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga lead the list with nine nominations for their collabo, Rain on Me. Billie Eilish and The Weeknd follow up with six nominations each while Roddy Ricch has been nominated thrice.

This year’s show will be hosted by actress Keke Palmer. It will be aired live on Sunday 30th August on MTV starting from midnight.
