On Saturday morning, the country woke up to the sad news of an inferno that had engulfed Moi Girls High School out of which nine students so far have lost their lives. Less than 24 hours later, Sigoti Girls and Vitale HGM Primary too went up in flames.

Chuka boys in Tharaka Nithi is in the list too. What exactly is happening? Education CS Fred Matiang’i says that the fire incident at Quabbz was an accident, with police saying that they’re narrowing down to the suspects. So much talk so far, with most Kenyans alleging that the school fires are politically motivated. Before we begin making allegations, and pointing fingers, let’s remember that this is not only an election year but also third term, when national examinations are expected to happen.

Last year, the country experienced nationwide school fires with most people saying that somebody was out to sabotage CS Matiang’i. Some attributed it to the fear of examinations after the minister had tough measures to curb cheating. Can it be politically motivated? Is it the fear of exams? With the Education CS now handling two sensitive ministries, it’s a bit scary to parents who feel he’s got his attention divided.

We should all remember that the kids just came from holiday, and it’s a very short term before they go to the next class or wind up school. Let’s all join hands and help the affected schools, plus stop this from happening again.
