Pupils from St Martin De Pores Primary School in Murang’a were swimming while on holiday in Diani, Kwale County when disaster struck. Rising swift tidal waves drowned seven students at around 5.30pm yesterday. Reports indicated four students were confirmed to have perished from the unfortunate incident and by last evening three others were feared dead.

The names of the dead children had not been released by the time of going to press yesterday. Families are expected to visit the mortuary today to identify the bodies .Unfortunately there were only volunteer divers present to rescue the drowning children and recover bodies. By Last evening naval divers from the navy had not arrived. According to Kwale County Commissioner rescue efforts were thwarted by poor visibility.
“The pupils died on their way to hospital after being retrieved from the waters and a fourth body was recovered from the waters this evening, three pupils are still missing’’
The bodies have since been taken to Diani Hospital Mortuary. A Red Cross official Mohamed Said confirmed the death toll and warned that the sea is normally too rough for swimming during this time of the year.

From The Insyder team, our condolences to the bereaved families and may their souls rest in peace.
