The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has reported that four of its members have committed suicide following the withholding of September salaries by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

Speaking in Kisumu during the union’s Nyanza Regional Annual General Meeting, KNUT National Treasurer John Matiang’i said withholding the union’s deductions is further complicating the matter.

He appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene and ask the TSC to pay the September salary that was withheld following the teachers’ strike.

Reports indicated that some teachers are on medication and cannot afford to purchase medicine for their various ailments. He added that teachers should not be victimised over the September’s strike, noting that the Court had ruled it legal.
