2020 is shaping up to be many things (to say the least), but it’s a great year to turn to new and old movies. Sure, you might be social distancing and figuring out how to adjust to our new reality of quarantine, but that does not mean your pop culture knowledge has to slip. So whether you are a fan of musical, romance, or reality shows, the list below has you covered.

Never Have I Ever

Co-created by Mindy Kaling, this show follows a teenager who is low on the social totem pole at school. After a traumatic year, she vows to improve her social life and lose her virginity to the hottest boy in school. But friends, family, and feelings won’t make it easy on her.

The Circle

Competing for the cash prize, hopefuls on The Circle must gain popularity and influence by interacting with other contestants solely through social media. This anonymity allows them to hide their true identities and portray themselves however they choose. The show also serves as a healthy reminder not to believe everything you see on social media.

Alexa and Katie

This show is all about the importance of friendship and support between girls- especially because one of the main characters has cancer. Alexa is a high school student who tries to maintain her outgoing personality and enthusiasm despite her health issues, thanks to her loyal best friend (Katie) who’s always by her side whether they’re at school, home, or the hospital.

Feel Good

Recovering addict and comedian Mae tries to control the addictive behaviours and intense romanticism that permeate her life. Her efforts are complicated by a new and all-consuming relationship with his girlfriend, George.

My Mad Fat Diary

16-year-old Rae, who has a lust for life and love, struggles with body image and mental health. Recently released after spending four months in a psychiatric hospital, Rae wants to find love but fears that, at 16 stone, she is too big for the world.

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie

Based on a real-life story, the West End musical comes to the big screen and follows Jamie New as he falls in love with drag and fights for the right to be his true self on prom night. Jamie is a fun and fearless boy who sometimes wants to strut his stuff in six-inch heels.

Reality High

While definitely created by adults who have never once used social media themselves, this millennial flick revolves around a nerdy high school girl named Dani who catches the eye of the hottest guy n school-as well as in competition with the school’s Instagram-obsessed mean girl. While predictable, Dani is too charming not to love.
