This organization tries to find one exceptional educator who deserves to be recognized around the world.
The Global Teacher Prize is an annual one million dollar award from the Varkey GEMS Foundation to be given to a super-special teacher. One innovative and caring teacher who has made an inspirational impact on their students and their community will receive the reward of a lifetime. This award targets teachers currently teaching children in a compulsory setting or between the ages 5-18. Through their website, you can either apply personally, or someone can nominate you. This year, applications close on the 5th of October.
The Global Teacher Prize gives you the following:
- Potential for national and international recognition of your achievements — Special Commendation for outstanding applicants in each region
- Potential to be invited to the Global Education and Skills Forum 2015 in Dubai as one of 10 Finalists
- Potential to win the Global Teacher Prize and receive prize of US$1 million
- Potential to have the Varkey GEMS Foundation make introductions to organizations who may be able to support relevant projects submitted by applicants.
The winner will be chosen by the prominent Global Teacher Prize Academy made up of head-teachers, educational experts, commentators, journalists, public officials, tech entrepreneurs, company directors and scientists from around the world.
From Kenya, Mwalimu Thuku wa Njuguna was nominated. If he wins, the Global Teacher Prize organization has offered him coverage on it in The New York Times and Forbes, if he is interested.
