With just less than a week after its slapdash release, Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly has already become legend. The album has received a uniformly positive critical response, and on Monday, it broke a major Spotify record. With 9.6 million streams, To Pimp a Butterfly earned the most streams from an LP in a single day.
The lyrical content moves away from the banal topics of money, sex, drugs, women; a common fixture in today’s hip hop music, and instead takes us into the private yet complex mind of Kendrick Lamar. You cannot be a passive listener to an album whose lyrics cover a myriad of complex human emotions like self-loathing, and self-love. It simply demands your full attention.
It’ll make you happy, make you want to cry about problems you don’t even have, basically, it’s a mess! Has someone ever truly shown you their soul and all the things that inhabit it? That’s what Lamar’s done with this.
Have a listen and tell us what you think about it.
